Introduction : Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most reported long-term effects breast cancer patients experience after diagnosis. Many interventions for CRF are effective, however, not for every individual. Therefore, intervention advice should be adjusted to patients' preferences and characteristics. Our aim was to develop an overview of eHealth interventions and their (preference sensitive) attributes. Methods : eHealth interventions were identified using a scoping review approach. [...]

As of August 29, 2022, COVID-19 has infected more than 601 million people worldwide, with the death toll exceeding 6.4 million. However, some of the devastating consequences of COVID-19 are only now emerging. Non–COVID-19 care, including cancer care, has been disrupted. Notably, cancer detection has declined dramatically.1 Cancer types that depend heavily on routine screening for early detection were most impacted, because screening programs were suspended for months.2 Delayed cancer diagnosis [...]

The impact of the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast cancer diagnoses: a population-based study in England
Gathani, Toral ; Dodwell, David ; Horgan, Kieran
Cancer services were seriously disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using publicly available data for England, we show that breast cancer diagnoses decreased substantially in the first year of the pandemic, but have recovered to at least pre-pandemic levels. Long term follow-up is needed to assess the impact on outcomes. The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was significant with three ‘stay at home’ orders of varying durations issued in England in March 2020, [...]

Cancer research in Europe: a focus on children and young people
Vassal, Gilles ; Pearson, Andrew D. J.
We commend Mark Lawler and colleagues 1 for their call for the strategic expansion of cancer research in Europe towards a more patient-centred and data-driven agenda. Cancer occurs in all ages and 35 000 children and young people (aged 0–25 years) are diagnosed each year in Europe. As a result of clinical research, integration of care and research, and academic cooperative groups linking clinical with basic and translational research during the past 50 years, 5-year survival for cancer has now [...]

From soup to nuts: Obesity impairs chemotherapy during early and late phases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treatment
Orgel, Etan ; Mittelman, Steve D.
Obesity during chemotherapy is associated with increased relapse and worse survival from acute lymphoblastic leukemia—a finding now extended from the first to the final days of therapy. Patients with obesity constitute a group at higher risk for poorer outcomes who urgently require new interventions targeting the multiple underlying biologic and systematic mechanisms.

Background : There is a lack of evidence from nationwide sample on the disparity of initiating immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) after metastatic lung cancer diagnosis. Methods : We identified metastatic lung cancer patients diagnosed between 2015 and 2020 from a large nationwide commercial claims database. We analyzed the time from metastatic lung cancer diagnosis to ICI therapy using Cox proportional hazard models. Independent variables included county-level measures (quintiles of [...]

Children living in poverty experience excess relapse and death from newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The influence of household poverty and neighborhood social determinants on outcomes from CAR T-cell therapy for relapsed/refractory (r/r) leukemia is poorly described. We identified patients with r/r CD19+ ALL/lymphoblastic lymphoma treated on CD19-directed CAR T-cell clinical trials or with commercial tisagenlecleucel from 2012 to 2020. Socioeconomic status (SES) was proxied [...]

Depressive symptoms are common among patients with glioblastoma, but patients are often not treated with antidepressants. There is only limited evidence on the association of antidepressant drug use with survival in glioblastoma. We performed a pooled analysis of patients treated within the CENTRIC, CORE, AVAglio and ACT-IV trials to explore the relation of antidepressant drug use with progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) at baseline, at the start of maintenance therapy and at the [...]

Cancer research is a crucial pillar for countries to deliver more affordable, higher quality, and more equitable cancer care. Patients treated in research-active hospitals have better outcomes than patients who are not treated in these settings. However, cancer in Europe is at a crossroads. Cancer was already a leading cause of premature death before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the disastrous effects of the pandemic on early diagnosis and treatment will probably set back cancer outcomes in [...]
