Quantitative Assessment of Parent and Patient Preferences
Bayoumi, Ahmed M.
Studying patient preferences is important for determining how health interventions and systems can be accountable and responsive to patients. To date, much patient preference research has been at the individual level, such as to evaluate trade-offs between drug benefits and harms, and at the aggregate level, such as to evaluate the optimal allocation of health resources. The study by Ananth and colleagues is a welcome extension of preference research into the field of quality improvement. Using [...]

The Pathways to Prevention (P2P) Program: Nutrition as Prevention for Improved Cancer Outcomes
Clayton, Margaret F ; Collins, Karen K ; Gold, Heather T ; Laiyemo, Adeyinka O ; Truesdale, Kimberly Parker ; Ritzwoller, Debra P ; Hiatt, Robert A
Adequate nutrition is central to well-being and health and can enhance recovery during illness. Although it is well known that malnutrition, both undernutrition and overnutrition, poses an added challenge for patients with cancer diagnoses, it remains unclear when and how to intervene and if such nutritional interventions improve clinical outcomes. In July 2022, the National Institutes of Health convened a workshop to examine key questions, identify related knowledge gaps, and provide [...]

In contemporary literature, little attention has been paid to the association between coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and cancer risk. We performed the Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the causal associations between the three types of COVID-19 exposures (critically ill COVID-19, hospitalized COVID-19, and respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection) and 33 different types of cancers of the European population. The results of the inverse-variance-weighted model [...]

Interpreting Cancer Incidence Trends: Challenges due to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Mariotto, Angela B ; Feuer, Eric J ; Howlader, Nadia ; Chen, Huann-Sheng ; Negoita, Serban ; Cronin, Kathy
The significant deficit in cancer diagnoses in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic disruptions in health care, can pose challenges in the estimation and interpretation of long-term cancer trends. Using SEER (2000-2020) data, we demonstrate that inclusion of the 2020 incidence rates in joinpoint models to estimate trends can result in a poorer fit to the data, less accurate, or less precise trend estimates, providing challenges in the interpretation of the estimates as a cancer control measure. To [...]

Does rapid discharge after breast cancer surgery have an impact on wound healing and complications? COVID-19 pandemic experience
Pösteki, Gökhan
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the health systems worldwide. Because of high volume of COVID-19 patients, all hospitals in our region were re-configured as COVID-19 centres and elective surgery procedures were cancelled. Our clinic was the only active centre in the region and grave increase in our patient volume urged our clinic to modify our discharge protocol. This retrospective study included all breast cancer patients underwent mastectomy and/or axillary dissection, in the Breast [...]
