The survival of childhood Wilms tumor is currently around 90%, with many survivors reaching reproductive age. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are established risk factors for gonadal damage and are used in both COG and SIOP Wilms tumor treatment protocols. The risk of infertility in Wilms tumor patients is low but increases with intensification of treatment including the use of alkylating agents, whole abdominal radiation or radiotherapy to the pelvis. Both COG and SIOP protocols aim to limit the [...]

Incidence of anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has increased in the U.S. Persons living with HIV (PLWH) have an elevated risk of anal SCC, and changes in the number of anal SCCs among PLWH may have influenced general population trends.Data were obtained from a linkage of HIV and cancer registries in 12 U.S. regions. The proportion of anal SCCs occurring among PLWH was estimated by sex, age group and race and ethnicity. To assess the impact of anal SCCs among PLWH on general population trends, [...]

Disparities in risk of advanced stage liver cancer and mortality by race and ethnicity
Li, Delfino Y ; VoPham, Trang ; Tang, Mei-Tzu C ; Li, Christopher I
Background : In the United States liver cancer is the 5th and 7th most common cause of cancer related-death among men and women, respectively. Compared to other racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Asian and Pacific Islander populations experience the highest incidence rates of liver cancer, but little is known about disparities in risk of advanced stage disease or risk of liver cancer mortality across these heterogenous populations. All statistical tests were 2-sided. Methods : In a [...]

Healthcare utilization in cancer survivors: six-month longitudinal cohort data
Gonzalez, Nicole ; Mead, K. Holly ; Pratt-Chapman, Mandi L. ; Arem, Hannah
Purpose: To describe healthcare utilization and reasons for delaying medical care and to identify factors that influence high healthcare utilization and care delay among cancer survivors. Methods: A population-based cohort of 6641 breast cancer survivors diagnosed between 1997 and 2009 who survived at least 10 years was identified within the Utah Cancer Registry. In addition, 36,612 cancer-free [...]

Trends in Colorectal Surgery During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Freund, Michael R. ; Wexner, Steven D.
Ever since its widespread outbreak, the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged health care systems worldwide. Allocation of resources in an effort to contain the spread of the virus, along with the reluctance of many patients to seek health care because of restrictions and social isolation, have severely disrupted preventive screenings and cancer care worldwide. Beds were needed for critically ill patients with COVID-19, and staff were required to care for those patients. Therefore, a resource [...]

Khoury, Emma ; Nevitt, Sarah ; Madsen, William Rohde ; Turtle, Lance ; Davies, Gerry ; Palmieri, Carlo
SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with more severe disease and death in patients with cancer. However, the implications of certain tumor types, treatments, and the age and sex of patients with cancer for the outcomes of COVID-19 remain unclear. To assess the differences in clinical outcomes between patients with cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection and patients without cancer but with SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to identify patients with cancer at particularly high risk for a poor [...]

COVID-19 in patients with hematologic malignancy
Langerbeins, Petra ; Hallek, Michael
The coronavirus infectious disease (COVID-19) shows a remarkable symptomatic heterogeneity. Several risk factors including advanced age, previous illnesses and a compromised immune system contribute to an unfavorable outcome. In patients with hematologic malignancy, the immune response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is significantly reduced explaining why the mortality rate of hematologic patients hospitalized for a SARS-CoV-2 infection is about 34%. Active [...]

It is unknown how body fat distribution modulates the cardiometabolic risk of testicular cancer survivors (TCSs) after cisplatin-based chemotherapy. For 455 patients enrolled in The Platinum Study at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue was quantified on pre-chemotherapy CT. VAT/SAT ratio was calculated as a quantitative measure of central adiposity. Endpoints were incidence of new post-chemotherapy cardiometabolic disease (new [...]

Hwang, In Cheol ; Ahn, Hong Yup ; Suh, Heuy Sun
Background: Cancer survivors suffer substantial psychological distress, but little is known about their vulnerabilities to suicidal ideation more than 5 years after diagnosis. Methods: We compared suicidal ideation among 1,033 adult cancer survivors, who had received a diagnosis of cancer more than 5 years previously, with that among individuals without a cancer history using nationwide survey data. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate suicidal ideation in cancer survivors. Results: [...]

Background : Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of chemotherapy, especially after taxane-based therapy. This study aimed to examine the relationship between symptoms of anxiety and depression before the start of taxane-based chemotherapy and the development of CIPN in women with breast cancer. Methods : In this prospective study, women with breast cancer receiving taxane-based (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy were recruited from four hospitals in the [...]
