The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), poses a danger to the health of populations around the world. Cancer is one of the comorbidities identified as being at risk of developing severe COVID-19.1 Among cancer patients, those with hematological cancers are at particularly high risk of severe disease or death.2, 3, 4 The reasons for developing severe COVID-19 in patients with hematological cancers, however, remain [...]

National health plans prioritized cancer patients on active treatment for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination because of high morbidity and mortality rates associated with COVID-191. The mRNA vaccine approval studies excluded recipients of immunosuppressive therapy raising concerns among the oncology community. Herein, we assessed the effects of active treatments on safety and immunogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-BNT162b2 vaccine in patients with solid malignancies.

Importance : Many patients with metastatic cancer receive high-cost, low-value care near the end of life. Identifying patients with a high likelihood of receiving low-value care is an important step to improve appropriate end-of-life care. Objective : To analyze patterns of care and interventions during terminal hospitalizations and examine whether care management is associated with sociodemographic status among adult patients with metastatic cancer at the end of life. Design, Setting, and [...]

The Hispanic/Latino population is the second largest racial/ethnic group in the continental United States and Hawaii, accounting for 18% (60.6 million) of the total population. An additional 3 million Hispanic Americans live in Puerto Rico. Every 3 years, the American Cancer Society reports on cancer occurrence, risk factors, and screening for Hispanic individuals in the United States using the most recent population-based data. An estimated 176,600 new cancer cases and 46,500 cancer deaths [...]

Infection is the second leading cause of death in patients with cancer. Loss of efficacy in antibiotics due to antibiotic resistance in bacteria is an urgent threat against the continuing success of cancer therapy. In this review, the authors focus on recent updates on the impact of antibiotic resistance in the cancer setting, particularly on the ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and [...]

Background : Solid organ transplant recipients have an elevated risk of cancer. Quantifying the life-years lost (LYL) due to cancer provides a complementary view of the burden of cancer distinct from other metrics and may identify subgroups of transplant recipients who are most affected. Methods : Linked transplant and cancer registry data were used to identify incident cancers and deaths among solid organ transplant recipients in the United States (1987-2014). Data on LYL due to cancer within [...]

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants accelerated approval for products that address serious or life-threatening illnesses that fill an unmet medical need; such products, which are initially approved using clinical surrogate end points, are then required to demonstrate clinical benefit through confirmatory trials. While the program has been praised as an important means to bring new products to market, the pathway has also been criticized as setting unacceptably low standards [...]
