Improvements in electronic technologies and the COVID-19 pandemic have combined to accelerate remote patient monitoring (RPM) into clinical practice. Sensors, secure transmission, cloud data repositories, and monitoring/response centers are required for a safe, secure, and effective workflow for medical care at a distance. In this review, we will focus on devices (sensors, wearables, and cellphones) and work streams most important for surgical patients with reference to other conditions only as a contrast.
