Electronic-cigarette smoke (ECS) is designed to deliver nicotine, and its use is gaining popularity. Previously, we found that ECS induces DNA damage and inhibits DNA repair in the mouse lungs and bladder urothelium. Nicotine induces the same types of DNA adducts and has a similar effect on DNA repair inhibition in human cells. Nicotine also enhances human cells’ mutation and tumorigenic transformation susceptibility. Our current results show that ECS-exposed mice developed lung adenocarcinoma [...]

Meat Consumption and Health: Food for Thought
Carroll, Aaron E. ; Doherty, Tiffany S.
For some time, medical and science organizations have been beating the drum that red and processed meat are bad for you. For almost as long, they have lamented that their efforts to inform the public have not convinced enough people to change their consumption. This month's issue offers us food for thought on why. The field of nutritional epidemiology is plagued by observational studies that have conducted inappropriate analyses, accompanied by likely erroneous conclusions. Many studies [...]

Background : Red and processed meats have been implicated as risk factors in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC) in U.S. women, but associations with cooking practices are less well established. Methods : Data are from the Sister Study, a cohort of women 35-74 years old from U.S. and Puerto Rico who have a sister diagnosed with breast cancer. Red and processed meat consumption, meat cooking practices, and intake of common meat products were collected at baseline using self-administered [...]

Background/objectives : To evaluate the role of the potential inflammatory effects of diet using the Energy adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII) for oral cancer. Subjects/methods : A case-control study including 295 oral cancer cases and 425 controls from September 2010 to June 2018 was performed in Fujian Province, China. The E-DII was calculated based on the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and adjusted by total energy intake. The association between E-DII and the risk of oral cancer [...]

Risk Factors for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer among Latina Women
Rey-Vargas, Laura ; Sanabria-Salas, María Carolina ; Fejerman, Laura ; Serrano-Gómez, Silvia J.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Latina women. Although they have a lower incidence of the disease when compared with other population groups such as non-Hispanic white and African-American women, some studies have shown that Latina women have a higher risk of mortality when compared with non-Hispanic white women. This phenomenon can be explained in part by the higher prevalence of aggressive subtypes in Latina women, particularly the triple negative. Such differences in breast [...]
