Over the past 20 years, the discipline of surgery has increasingly turned an eye toward the patient experience of postoperative recovery. Through preoperative optimization and reduction of modifiable risk as well as institution of postoperative care pathways to identify developing complications as early as possible, the metrics of care delivery now include process and quality of life outcomes. The consumerization of medicine, transformation from paper to electronic health record documentation, and the integration of digital technology in all aspects of daily life have laid the groundwork for a patient-centered revolution.
